Groundswell Giving was founded by 3 young women to fund and accelerate climate action in Australia.
From careers in climate campaigning, philanthropy, and community building, the trio recognised the need for a giving platform that empowered everyday people to put real skin in the game to tackle the root causes of the climate crisis: advocacy to force political leaders to reduce emissions to levels that will play a genuine part in avoiding the worst impacts of climate change.
Groundswell Giving was their solution. Members join by pitching in $20 a week or $1000 a year, this money is then pooled and granted out to strategic, high-impact climate action and advocacy, as voted upon by all members. Along the way, members get to learn about climate solutions from experts in climate justice, energy and advocacy, and are empowered by the tangible change their investment creates.
Since launching in February 2020, the giving circle has grown to 300 members, strategically investing nearly 300k in their first year of operation.
They have big plans for the coming year, and are excited about the potential for impact on climate action in Australia as Groundswell membership continues to grow. They welcome you to join the groundswell of Australians investing in climate action today.
As the fossil fuel lobby knows, shifting public opinion and influencing public policy is possible, but it's not cheap. Right now, only 2.5% of all giving in Australia goes to the environment and climate change. Given the scale of the challenge ahead, this is woeful – and needs to be turned around, fast. It is going to take a huge amount of strategic and well-resourced advocacy to get our political leaders to reduce emissions to levels that will play a genuine part in avoiding the worst impacts of climate change. There are many brilliant climate organisations in Australia working on strategies to tackle and overcome the climate crisis, but all are drastically under-funded.
Groundswell was founded to rapidly accelerate funding to the climate movement to build the power we need to win the war on climate inaction in Australia. Membership offers everyday people a way to invest in high-impact and strategic climate advocacy and action that addresses the root causes of the climate crisis, not just the symptoms.
